We were just two college students studying earth science when we had the idea and said “Let’s create something!” We started by making jewellery for Durga Puja. We were optimistic. Even if it didn’t work, we planned to wear it ourselves. That’s the true spirit of entrepreneurship. We had to be willing to fail but never give up.
Our small business of selling handmade earrings on Instagram quickly grew. We started designing our own products and outsourced the final production process to artisans and traditional weavers across West Bengal.
But when the Covid pandemic hit, we had to think fast. We shifted our offline business online. It was the only way we could reach customers at that time. Being a direct-to-consumer brand, having our own online store gives us the ability to serve millions of people outside of our physical location.
We view building ‘Stree Kolkata’ as a sustainable brand as our top priority. Our speciality lies in having a network of skilled artisans in different parts of the country. Our product collections Jamdani and Begumbahar are examples of how we like to highlight the unique fabric and needlework of certain regions across the nation!
