About the Instructor
Dr. Shrinivas G. Viladkar is Professor-Emeritus at the Department of Geology, St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, having taught there from 1977 to 2003. He recently served a 4-year stint as Professor of Geology at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhopal. He is also Honorary Director at the Carbonatite Research Centre, Kadipani, Gujarat. He completed his B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD. at the Department of Geology, St. Xavier’s College, (affiliated to the University of Mumbai) in 1965, 1967 and 1972 respectively. The title of his thesis was “carbonatite-alkalic Complex of Amba Dongar, Chhota Udaipur, Gujarat State".

From 1973 to 1976 he held the Senior Research Fellowship (Post-doctoral) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, and from 1980 to 1985 he held a Post-doctoral Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, Bonn, West Germany to continue research at the Mineralogisch-Petrographisches Institute der Universitat Freiburg, Germany with Professor Dr. W. Wimmenauer, in two stints.

In 1991, Dr Viladkar was Visiting Fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Bonn, Germany at the Mineralogisch-Petrographisches Institut der Universitat, Heidelberg for three months. In 1992, he was Visiting Scientist in the Laboaratoire de Petrologie of the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France, for two months. In 1993 he held the Visiting Fellowship of the Max-Planck Geselschaft at the Max-Planck Institut fur Chemie, Abt. Biogeochemie, Mainz, Germany, for three months. In 1994 he was Visiting Professor at the Department of Geology and Isotope Geochemistry, University of Rennes, France for two months. In 1995-1996, he became Visiting Scientist of the Max-Planck Gesenschaft, Germany at the Max-Planck Institut fur Chemie, Abt. Geochemise (Prof. A.W. Hofmann Group), Mainz, Germany.

He has also organised several field excursions for students and visiting scientists from abroad based on “carbonatite-alkalic complexes” in different parts of India. In 1981, he Visited Mt. St. Helens, an active volcano in the western part of USA after its eruption. He has given several lectures in school and colleges levels (in India) and in Universities abroad and attended International conferences. In December 1996, he organised an “International Workshop on Carbonatites”, sponsored by the Research and Science Centre of the Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation, Ahmedabad. He has also been Scientific Advisor to ICGS, Hamburg University, Germany.
